Multi-Boot Laptops
What is a Multi-Boot laptop?
A Laptop that has had the hard-drive split into more than 1 partition allowing for an additional operating system to be installed. Software is used to manage the multiple partitions so they are easily accessed, each operating system when selected runs completely standalone like your standard laptop would.
There is no limit to size or number of partition other than current hard-drive size limitations, maximum currently 4 Terabytes (4TB ). We at KDS Tools recommend that a good quality SSD Hard-drive is used for speed and reliability when building a new system or upgrading an existing Laptop, we can also mix the OS systems i.e. Window 7 & Windows 10 to give flexibility of installations.
What are the Advantages?
One of the biggest advantages is that a single Laptop can run multiple diagnostic platforms with no conflicted software due to everything being installed on a single operating system. In the past when garages are budgeting for multiple systems, the cost of the laptop is a big factor in deciding the make & specification as more than one laptop was needed for each diagnostic system. So by using a multi-boot laptop we can offer a single laptop which is multi-brand, just by selecting a partition from boot and connecting the associated diagnostic interface. We can then free up money from your budget allowing you to choose a better specification and brand of laptop. Multi-boot systems are also good when you are wanting to add or expand your diagnostic infantry, just by purchasing the new Diagnostic Interface and then having us install the new software and licenses.
What are the Disadvantages?
If you are a busy workshop then having one laptop with multiple brands means that only one manufacture can be worked with at a time, if this a problem then we would recommend a additional laptop for multiple users. We have also found that some brands like BMW when programing a vehicle it can tie the laptop up for some time as the process can take a few hours to complete, so it is important to consider what software to put together when building the system. If the laptop fails or is damaged while in the workshop then without a back up all diagnostic systems are lost until laptop is repaired or replaced.
We can offer loan laptops and replacement hard-drives to get you up and running again should your system become damaged or unusable this is why support is a key facture in choosing a system.
If you would like to discuss your workshop requirements or plans to upgrade or help in making an informed decision to which systems is best for your Workshop then please contact us for more information.
